A New Old Direction

I might have mentioned that I sold my Canon RF STM prime lenses in 35mm, 50mm and 85mm. Those lenses were nice and sharp and two had image stabilization. I was not a big fan of the slow STM focusing motor these lenses used and they were plasticky.

Back in the 1980s and 1990s I used Minolta manual focus film bodies and Minolta MD lenses. I still have the MD 50mm f/1.7 lens that dates from the 1970s and which came with an XG-M body.

I decided to pick up an adapter to allow me to use this lens on my EOS R bodies. While there is no autofocus or image stabilization, and you change aperture via a ring on the lens rather than a dial on the camera, it works out well.

There is no need to press a button for depth of field preview as you are always seeing through the shooting aperture. Using Aperture Priority, the camera chooses the shutter speed. With exposure simulation enabled, the viewfinder and screen instantly adjust to the correct exposure. With focus peaking, the portions of the scene that are in focus are outlined in red.

I visited the Photo Center of the Capital District which has hundreds of manual focus cameras and lenses waiting for someone to use them. I left with a good condition copy of the MC 58mm f/1.4 lens which dates from the late 1960s as described below from 678 Vintage Cameras.

This lens doesn't seem to be quite as sharp as the 50mm f/1.7 I have but I might just have been using it at wider apertures. It is all metal and I obtained it for $50. I also found an original Minolta D55NA lens hood on eBay which, while costing half as much as the lens, results in a nice package at a good price.

I will put images made with the Minolta lenses in a gallery at https://trulandphotography.com/minoltalenses. Here are some from the past few days.
